The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
July 31, 2011
I trust, O Christ, in you alone; No earthly hope avails me. You will not see me overthrown When Satan's host assails me. No human strength, no earthly pow'r Can see me through the evil hour, For you alone my strength renew. I cry to you! I trust, O Lord, your promise true (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 437:1)
Worship Focus: Our mighty God protects us
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 277, 419:1-4, 419:5-7
First Lesson: Exodus 33:12-23
Moses pleads for the Lord to go with them. The people had sinned by worshiping the golden calf. They did not deserve his Presence. But Moses pleads. Without God's presence they would fail. In his mercy and compassion the Lord listens to Moses' prayer.
Psalm 145, p. 119
Praise our mighty God who protects and provides for us.
Second Lesson: Romans 7:15-25
By ourselves we don't even have the power to resist our own sin. Thanks be to God that he rescues us through our Lord Jesus Christ. How mighty he is!
Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
The mighty Lord hides himself from the wise and powerful. But to those who like a little child know how much we need our Savior-God, how powerful his words are: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest … rest for your souls”
