The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost
August 14, 2011
Even so, Lord, quickly come To your final harvest-home; Gather all your people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin, There, forever purified, In your garner to abide. Come with all your angels, come; Raise the glorious harvest-home. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 437:1)
Worship Focus: Awaiting the final harvest
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 358, 389, 356
First Lesson: Joel 3:12-16
The end is coming. Judgment day draws near. But have no fear as you follow your Savior. For he is our refuge.
Psalm 18, p. 69
The Lord is our rock and refuge.
Second Lesson: Romans 8:26, 27
Even when times are so bad that we do not know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, God's people. What a comfort and refuge!
Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
Even though the seed of God's Word grows in our hearts, yet we live in a world filled with weeds. How we long for the final harvest!
The weeds will be burnt and the righteous will shine like the sun.
