September 25, 2011

Jesus, lead us on Till our rest is won; And although the way be cheerless, We will follow, calm and fearless. Guide us by your hand To our fatherland. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 422:1)

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

God's Word

First Lesson: Jeremiah 15:15-21

Look at the cross Jeremiah had to bear. He faithful spoke the word of the Lord, but his fellow Israelites rejected him and his message. What loneliness! But the Lord gave him the strength to stand firm like a fortified wall of bronze.

Psalm 121

The Lord is with us watching over us no matter what troubles of life we struggle through as we follow him.

Second Lesson: Romans 12:1-8

Because of God's mercy that saved us in Christ, we now offer ourselves as living sacrifices, serving one another according to the gifts God has given us. We help each other bear our crosses.

Gospel: Matthew 16:21-26

Jesus speaks of his cross and ours.

Sermon: Matthew 16:13-20

What If There Were No Cross …

  1. … for Christ?
  2. … for us?
