The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
October 2, 2011
I, a sinner, come to you With a penitent confession. Savior, show me mercy, too; Grant for all my sins remission. Let these words my soul relieve -- Jesus sinners does receive. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 304:5)
Worship Focus: Love one another
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 505, 304, 419, 467
First Lesson: Ezekiel 33:7-11
Like a watchman, call out the Lord's words. Confront sin with the heart of the Lord that takes no pleasure in the death of a sinner, but that he turn from his evil ways and live.
No matter what your sin, in Jesus you have forgiveness.
Second Lesson: Romans 13:1-10
The government is God's agent to keep law and order. Give to the government what you owe. But also remember the continuing debt of law that we all owe.
Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20
With a heart that longs to win our brother back, we speak to him about whatever sin is separating him from God. We go with divine authority, yet in humbleness.

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
Dear friends at St. John’s,
Thank you so much for your prayers and cards for Lisa and our family over the past years. Thank you especially for the money you gave us to help us with our medical bills. What a blessing for Lisa so she can more peacefully transition from her job to disability, and what a beautiful example of what Paul wrote about the Body of Christ: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it (1 Cor 12:26).” All these years later, we still think of you all as “home.”
Thank you again.
Pastor Bob and Lisa Johannes
