The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 23, 2011

Prayer:

I, a sinner, come to you With a penitent confession. Savior, show me mercy, too; Grant for all my sins remission. Let these words my soul relive -- Jesus sinners does receive. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 304:5)

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 23, 2011

Worship Focus: Repentance follows the Lord's way

Order of Worship: Morning Worship - I

Hymns: 393, 306, 398, 339:1,2

God's Word

First Lesson: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32

Through the Prophet Ezekiel the Lord calls out to his people. He calls them to turn from their evil ways and turn back to him. That's what repentance is.

Psalm 25, p. 74

The repentant heart turns the Lord and trusts his mercy.

Second Lesson: Philippians 2:1-11

A repentant heart follows the attitude of Jesus, humbly serving others and trusting God's glorious salvation.

Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Repentance is more than just words. A repent heart acts in line with the Lord's will, just as the first son did.

Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32

Repent and Live

  1. Repentance confesses how just the Lord's way is
  2. Repentance flourishes in a brand new heart

News & Notes

Informational Insurance Meeting: This Tuesday, October 25, at 7:00pm, there will be an informational meeting concerning the property and liability insurance coverage for the church and parsonage. The meeting is open to all. Council members are especially encouraged to attend. A representative from Church Mutual will share the different options that are available and the relative importance of each.

After pastoral support and organist compensation, insurance is the largest item in the church's budget. Also, the insurance options that are chosen (or not chosen) can have a huge financial impact far beyond the yearly premium, especially in the area of liability, not only for the congregation but for the leadership of the congregation as well. Your informed input is import as the council reaches a decision as to what to do next year.

Reformation Festival: Our joint Reformation Festival will be at St. Paul's, Morris, this year on Sunday October 30, at 4:00pm. The theme is: What Luther's Seal Means for Us. St. Paul's also invites us to join them for a meal and Christian fellowship after the service. Guest congregations are asked to bring bars, etc. for desert.

Reformation Joint Choir: If you would like to sing in the joint choir at the area Reformation service, please be at St. Paul's in Morris by 3:15pm next Sunday, October 30. We plan to sing “O Lord, We Bow in Adoration” in four-parts and “In Christ Alone” in unison.

News & Notes (cont.)

Mission Festival: “Walking Together.” That's what we do as a synod. We are united in the same faith and walk together to live that faith. Walking together enables us to bring the Gospel of Jesus to places we could never go personally.

We'll ponder some of these truths during our missionary festival this year. The date is November 6. Pastor Seth Bode, who is serving as a tutor at Great Plains Lutheran High School, will be our guest preacher. A potluck meal will follow the service.

Parish Nursing: A special WELS Nurses “Meet & Greet” event is taking place at Crown of Life Lutheran Church, 115 Crusader Avenue, West St. Paul, MN 55118 on Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

The WELS Nurses Association (WELSNA) is new, but interest and excitement for what we want to do is quickly building. We hope you will help us to spread the news about this special group—WELS nurses working together as servants of Christ. More details are provided on our website: www.welsnurses.net
