January 15, 2012

With one accord, O God, we pray: Grant us your Holy Spirit. Help us in our infirmity Through Jesus' blood and merit. Grant us to grow in grace each day That by this sacrament we may Eternal life inherit. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 94:1)

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 49:1-6

The Savior speaks. The Lord has made him a light for the Gentiles. Through Baptism he shines into your heart.

Psalm 2, p. 65

Jesus is the Anointed One, anointed not with oil but with the Holy Spirit and with power.

Second Lesson: Acts 16:25-34

Paul and Silas were jailed at Philippi for driving out a demon from a slave girl. But they continue to confess their faith in song. What a miracle the Holy Spirit works in the jailer's heart, so that his whole household was baptized.

Gospel: Mark 1:4-11

Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, who came to save sinners. His Baptism gives us the testimony of the Father and of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 6:1-4

Baptized into Christ's Death

  1. What a connection with him!
  2. What power over sin!

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

More detailed highlights of the meeting will be in next week's bulletin.

Note from the Treasurer: The health insurance and pension bill that was due in Dec. did not arrive in time to pay it last year. This bill will be paid in Jan. along with the Jan. bill, so expenses this month will be extra high.
