The Second Sunday after Epiphany

January 22, 2012

Take my will and make it thin; It shall be longer mine. Take my heart -- it is thine own; It shall be thy royal throne. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 469:5)

The Second Sunday after Epiphany

January 22, 2012

Worship Focus: God's Word speaks to us

Order of Worship: The Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 277, 86, 283, 333

God's Word

First Lesson: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

We listen to our Lord as servants who long to do his will.

Psalm 67

God blesses us as his Word shapes our hearts and minds.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

We have been bought at a price, the greatest price of all. Such a gracious Lord we have! How can we not serve him with our hearts and honor him with our bodies?

Gospel: Mark 1:43-51

The words of Jesus transformed Nathanael. Whom might you invite to come and see Jesus, just as Philip invited Nathanael?

1 Samuel 3:1-10

Listen As a Servant

News & Notes

Pastor Gone: Pastor Bitter will be flying to Arizona on Friday to drive his father-in-law home. He'll be gone for about a week. If you need pastoral assistance, please call Pastor Main 589-4662. Pastor Main will be preaching next Sunday. If you need to reach Pastor Bitter, Mary will be at the parsonage. The date of the funeral service for her mother will be set after her dad returns home.

Installation: The church council will be installed during the service today. Justin Flaten is the new chairman. Continuing to serve on the council are Doug Nelson (secretary), Gerald Hoffman (treasurer), David Paul (elder), Richard Lubenow (elder), Richard Smith (trustee), Duane Hausmann (trustee). We thank Donald Spencer for serving the past three years as the chairman.

Annual Meeting Notes: The annual meeting opened with prayer on January 8, 2012, after the potluck. The reports of the pastor, treasurer, and trustees are in the Annual Report available in the narthex. The treasurer reported that January's bills will be high because the health insurance and pension bills did not arrive in time to be paid in December.

Justin Flaten was elected chairman by unanimous consent.

The voters authorized the congregation to participate in the E12 (Easter 2012) program. You can read about it in the “Easter Outreach Material Available” article in the Together insert.

The service time for Lenten and Holy Week services was set at 7:00pm, which is the same as last year. Lent begins on February 22. Easter is on April 8. Like last year, breakfast will begin at 7:30am and the Easter service will be at 9:00am

The interest from the Scholarship Fund ($371.27) was designated to go toward the costs of our students (Abigail Bitter & Caleb Bitter) at Great Plains Lutheran High School, Watertown, SD.

Congregational Mission Offering (CMO) was set at $8000, the same as last year. In 2011 the final mission total was $8110.75.

The commitment for the Lutheran Institutional Ministry Association (LIMA) was kept at $500. LIMA supports the WELS hospital chaplain program in the Twin Cities and the campus ministry programs at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

The organist salary was kept the same at $3240.

The guest speaker stipend was kept the same at $80 plus mileage with a total maximum of $200 (stipend + mileage).

Mileage reimbursement was kept the same at $0.50/mile.

The pastor's salary was kept the same as originally set in 2011 at $35,040 of which $3000 was designated as parsonage allowance. This takes into account that the council had earlier approved switching from Plan 3 to Plan 1 under the WELS VEBA health insurance, which is a more expense plan. Under Plan 1 there will no longer be a Health Savings Account.

The next council meeting is schedule for February 12 at 11:30am after the service. The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for April 15 at 11:30am after the service.

The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer
