The Second Sunday in Lent

March 4, 2012

'Tis I, Lord Jesus, I confess, Who should have borne sin's wages And lost the peace of heav'nly bliss Through everlasting ages. Instead you go To bear the blow, My punishment to carry. Your death and blood Lead me to God; By grace I there may tarry (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 126:3)

God's Word

First Lesson: Genesis 28:10-17

What earthly troubles Jacob went through, many of which we could say he brought on himself! Yet he turned from relying on himself and instead learned to follow his Savior no matter how difficult the road. For Jesus is the only stairway to heaven.

Psalm 73, p. 94

Without Jesus even heaven is bare. Follow him.

Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-11

Through faith in Jesus we have open access to God. No matter what suffering comes, hope in Jesus will not disappoint. For while we were God's enemies, he gave us his Son, Jesus Christ. Now that we are reconciled to him through Jesus, how much more we count on his love to save us! Follow Jesus.

Gospel: Mark 8:31-38

Jesus speaks of his cross and ours. Follow him.

Mark 8:31-38

Take Up Your Cross

  1. By denying yourself
  2. So that you're driven to Christ's cross

Copies of sermon are in the narthex and online.

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
