Pentecost: The Coming of the Holy Spirit
May 27, 2012
Come, holy Light, Guide divine, And cause the Word of life to shine. Teach us to know our God aright And call him Father with delight. From ev'ry error keep us free; Let none but Christ our Master be That we in living faith abide, In him, our Lord, with all our might confide. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 203:1)
Worship Focus: Jesus pours out the Holy Spirit
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 184, 176, 517, 619
First Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14
Hear the word of the Lord. For through the word the Holy Spirit has breathed spiritual life into our dead, dry bones. Through the word he continues to make us an army ready to serve our Lord.
Psalm 51b, p. 87
Through God's word in Scripture and the Sacraments the Holy Spirit works repentance in our hearts and brings us the joy of salvation to serve our Lord.
Second Lesson: Acts 2:1-21
As Jesus had promised, he sends the Holy Spirit on his disciples in a special way to enable them to do the work of Apostles. They proclaim the Good News of Jesus.
Gospel: John 14:25-27
Jesus speaks these words on the night he was betrayed. Despite the sorrow the disciples would face, the Holy Spirit would bring them the peace that only Jesus gives.
Vacation Bible School: We've had our planning meeting for VBS. The theme this year is Team Jesus. The dates are July 23-27 from 10:00am to noon. How am I to live since Jesus has already saved me? The answer: “Run in such a way as to get the prize … Do it to get a crown that will last forever” (1 Corinthians 9:24, 25).
Council Notes: The council met after service on June 20 and opened the meeting with prayer. Pastor Bitter reported on two non-member funerals in April, one at St. John's (Loren Becker), the other at St. Paul's (Walter Mohr) filling in for Pastor Main. He talked about summer plans including graduate Sunday, district convention, VBS, the outdoor service with St. Paul's, and vacation time. The trustees talked about landscaping the front of the church and getting estimates for the removal of some trees. The council also recommended getting the Memorial Book up to date.
Summer schedule: Sunday service is at 9:00am. The same service is the following Wednesday at 7:00pm. Due to District Convention, there will be no Wednesday service on June 13.
