The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

July 22, 2012

Worship Focus: God sends out his word

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 233, 525, 380, 577:1, 2

God's Word

First Lesson: Amos 7:10-18

Amos had been brought up as a shepherd and farmer. That's the life he knew and had been trained for. But God called him from tending the flock to proclaim his word. So Amos left his home and went to the northern ten tribes. He proclaimed God's word, even though they didn't want to hear it.

Psalm 78, p. 95

Since God has sent out his word, he wants us to hear it and pass it on to our children.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 1:3-14

God has sent his word to us so that we hear and believe it. That's how he brings spiritual blessings to his chosen.

Gospel: Mark 6:7-13

Jesus sends out the twelve disciples to proclaim his word.

Ephesians 1:3-14

God Elected You in Christ

  1. Why did he choose me? -- It's all about Jesus
  2. How do I know whether I'm among the elect?

News & Notes (cont.)

Vacation: Pastor Bitter and family will be on vacation visiting his parents in Wisconsin from August 1 to 5. If you need a pastor during this time, please call Pastor Main (Home: 320-589-4662; Office:320-589-1840). Since Pastor Bitter is gone, there will be no Wednesday evening service on August 1. Sunday morning service on August 5 will be at 10:30. On August 8 there will be the regular Wednesday service at the regular time, 7:00pm.

Fair: We need helpers to sit at the fair booth Thursday, August 9, through Sunday, August 12. Most of the shifts are two-hours long. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. We're coordinating with St. Paul's. Sign up as soon as possible to get the time slot you prefer. We've never had too many helpers. So if you're available, please consider signing up.

Service Times: Please note that for the next two weeks the Sunday morning worship time will be 10:30. Next week, July 29, it's 10:30 because of the outdoor service. The following week, August 5, it's 10:30 because Pastor Bitter is on vacation. On August 12 the service will be at 9:00, the normal summer schedule.

Quarterly Meeting Notes:

The meeting opened with prayer. The voters welcomed our new youth confirmands (Collin Brown, Ryan Gray, Morgan Nelson) as communicant members. Pastor reported on summer activities including work on the memorial book, youth room, VBS, outdoor service, vacation plans, and the symposium and mentor training he will be attending at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary September 17-19.

The voters discussed the current budget deficit in the General Fund. They decided to continue to make the need known to our members.

The trustees reported on the removal of trees that were diseased, damaged, or dead. Some hail damage on the siding to the parsonage garage and on the shingles of the roofs was reported to the insurance company. We're still waiting to see what they will cover.

The voters approved returning to our regular school year schedule on Sept. 9, which is Sunday school 9:15; Bible Class, Youth Class 9:30; Divine Service 10:30.

They discussed having communion only once a month, but wanted to leave it at twice a month as currently scheduled.

They discussed dropping phone service to the church but wanted to leave it as it is in case of emergencies.

The next quarterly meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 14 after the service. The next council meeting is August 12 after the service.

Christian Rock Concert: Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hutchinson invites you to an outdoor concert by the musical group “Proclamation” on Saturday, August 25, 6:00pm, at the Library Square in Hutchinson. Their repertoire ranges from ballads to Christian Rock. While the concert is free of charge, a “free will” bucket will be passed to raise money for various ministries supported by Immanuel. A root beer float stand will be operating for a small price. Please see the poster in the narthex.

If you might be interested in going or need a ride, please speak with Pastor Bitter.
