The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 2, 2012
Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's head, You are her one foundation, In you she trusts, before you bows, And waits for your salvation. Built on this rock secure, Your Church shall endure Though all the world decay And all things pass away. Oh, hear, oh hear us, Jesus! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 536:1)
Jesus is the foundation for faith and family
Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15
Hymns: 281, 343, 311, 158 (LAPPY)
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156
First Lesson: Joshua 24:1, 2a, 14-18
Joshua had led the people into the promised land. In his farewell address he urges them to serve the Lord. May we echo Joshua conviction: As for me and my house, we will service the Lord.
Psalm 71, p. 92
Jesus is the rock and foundation from generation to generation.
Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:21-31
Our submission to Christ shows in how we conduct our homes. The Christian wife submits to her husband as to the Lord, and the Christian husband loves his wife, even as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
Gospel: John 6:60-69
We see the reaction to Jesus Bread of Life sermon.
Fall Schedule: Next week on September 9, we return to our regular fall schedule. 9:15am Sunday school; 9:30am Bible class; 9:30am Youth Bible class; 10:30am divine service.
Bible Class: Many have questioned who the real Jesus is. What do we mean when we confess Jesus as the Christ, our Lord? Next Sunday, September 9, at 9:30am we explore what the Bible teaches us about Jesus in the course: Christ: He Is My Lord by Pastor Robert Koester.
* The extra high expenses and offerings in August are due to the cost of tree removal (over $2000), which was covered by a one-time private donation.
Bridal Shower: You are invited to a bridal shower for Christine Lubenow, the fiancée of Thomas Smith. The shower is on Saturday, September 15, from 2:00-4:00pm at the American Legion in Morris. Christine is registered at Target.
Concert Invitation: The Youth Group at Immanuel Lutheran in Willmar is pleased to tell you that Koine is coming to Willmar for an outdoor concert on Friday, September 7. We would like to invite your youth group for a time of music, fun, fellowship, and food. The rest of the congregation is invited as well. The concert is at 1816 5th Street SW, Willmar. Bring your lawn chairs. Youth arrive early (at 5:30) for a picnic style supper. Congregation arrives at 6:30 for concert. A free will offering will be taken to support Koine's ministry. If the weather does not permit, the concert will be in the church. Please see the poster in the narthex for more information.
Immanuel would like us to RSVP the number of youth attending the supper, so let Pastor Bitter know if you plan to go. If you need a ride, let him know as well.
Surgery: Dennis Nack, the grandfather of Chanc Nack and Kallista and Presten Bannister, has undergone lung-transplant surgery. The family requests your prayers. If you would like to help cover some of the costs that insurance doesn't cover, please see the letter posted in the narthex or visit helpHOPElive.org and enter Dennis Nack in the “Find a Patient” box.
