The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 9, 2012

Grant me the strength to do With ready heart and willing Whatever you command, My calling here fulfilling, That I do what I should While trusting you to bless The outcome for my good, For you must give success. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 459:2)

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 9, 2012

Worship Focus: God's Word brings us his strength

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 457, 459, 200, 455

God's Word

First Lesson: Deuteronomy 4:1, 2, 6-8

How wise and precious God's Word is! We dare not add to it or subtract from it. Moses urges the people not to tamper with what the Lord says, but rather to obey it.

Psalm 119c, p. 111

Let God's Word be our love and delight as we continually contemplate it and follow it in our lives.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 6:10-20

Take up the full armor of God so that you are always strong in the Lord.

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14, 15, 21-23

Jesus points out how the teachers have reduced God's law to only outward obedience adding their own man-made rules. When we take God's word to heart believing all that he says, it cleans us from the inside out, making us strong in the Lord.

Ephesians 6:10-20

Battle on with the Lord's Strength

  1. Knowing your enemy
  2. Standing firm with God's armor
  3. Staying alert in prayer

News & Notes

Bible Class: Many have questioned who the real Jesus is. What do we mean when we confess Jesus as the Christ, our Lord? Join us for Bible class at 9:30am, as we explore what the Bible teaches us about Jesus in the course: Christ: He Is My Lord by Pastor Robert Koester.

Don't we know this already? Yes, but that's not a reason not to come. As we dig into these Bible truths,

  • we honor, worship, and adore our Savior by contemplating the mystery of who he is;
  • we build our defenses against so many groups and religions that change these truths and rob him of his full glory; and
  • we energize our lives to follow him, for the more clearly we see Jesus, the more willing we are to live for him.

So come and grow.

Bridal Shower: You are invited to a bridal shower for Christine Lubenow, the fiancée of Thomas Smith. The shower is on Saturday, September 15, from 2:00-4:00pm at the American Legion in Morris. Christine is registered at Target.

Surgery: Dennis Nack, the grandfather of Chanc Nack and Kallista and Presten Bannister, has undergone lung-transplant surgery. The family requests your prayers. If you would like to help cover some of the costs that insurance doesn't cover, please see the letter posted in the narthex or visit and enter Dennis Nack in the “Find a Patient” box.
