End Times 3: Saints Triumphant

November 18, 2012

Prayer:

O Christ, you died, and yet you live; To me account your merit, My pardon seal, my sins forgive, And cleanse me by your Spirit. Beneath your cross I view the day When heav'n and earth shall pass away, And thus prepare to meet you. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 208:4)

End Times 3: Saints Triumphant

November 18, 2012

Worship Focus: We're saints through faith in Christ

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 551, 207, 401, 214

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Daniel 12:1-3

The end will come and the dead will be raised. Those who are wise (knowing Jesus in faith) will shine like the stars.

Psalm 118, p. 108

Our crucified Savior, rejected by the people, is our living Capstone.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 10:11-18

We stand as saints at the judgment only because of Christ's one sacrifice which wipes away our sins from the memory of God's record books.

Gospel: John 5:25-29

Jesus' voice in his word and sacraments now calls out to bring people from spiritual death to life. The time will come when he calls the dead out of the graves.

John 5:25-29

You're Alive

  1. Raised by the Son's voice
  2. Raised to live eternally

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. What events lead up to Jesus' words here?
  2. What has raised you to life when you were still dead in sin?
  3. Where alone can you be certain you are hearing the voice of Jesus, the Son of God?
  4. How alone are our hearts holy so that on the Last Day the Judge raise us to live and not to be condemned?
  5. How does a living faith in Jesus show itself in our lives?
  6. What brings us joy even now as Christians, who believe in Jesus?

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

For All the Saints

Today we remember the saints that the Lord has called home to heaven from our congregation over the past six years. They rest from their labors in the glorious victory of heaven, won for them by Jesus. They are the saints triumphant.

We remember them during the first hymn which will be divided as follows:

Sing 551:1-3 -- Pastor reads names

Sing 551:4-6 -- Pastor continues reading of names

Sing 551:7, 8
