The First Sunday after Christmas
December 30, 2012
To thee my heart I offer, O Christ-child sweet and dear, Upon thy love relying; Oh, be thou ever near! Take thou my heart and give me thine, And let it be forever mine, O Jesus, holy, undefiled, My Savior meek and mild. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 43:1)
Worship Focus: Born to be our Substitute
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 42, 41, 34, 71
First Lesson: 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26
Young Samuel was dedicated to serve the Lord. How much more did Jesus dedicate his entirely life to serve his heavenly Father! By his service we are saved.
Psalm 111, p. 106
We sing to the Lord, for his hands have provided redemption for us through Jesus Christ. In him we have true wisdom.
Second Lesson: Hebrews 2:10-18
God's Son became our brother to destroy Satan's power and free us by atoning for our sins.
Gospel: Luke 2:41-52
As Jesus visits the temple, we not only witness his wisdom but also his perfect obedience. He was born as our Substitute so that his sinless life, even as a child, counts as our record of righteousness.
