The Baptism of our Lord

January 13, 2013

Prayer:

With one accord, O God, we pray: Grant us your Holy Spirit. Help us in our infirmity Through Jesus' blood and merit. Grant us to grow in grace each day That by this sacrament we may Eternal life inherit. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 299:2)

God's Word

First Lesson: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

David was anointed with oil to show that he would be the next king. Jesus was anointed with the fullness of the Holy Spirit his entire life, because he is the Christ, our King, who conquered Satan for us.

Psalm 2, p. 65

The nations rage but Jesus reigns.

Second Lesson: Titus 3:4-7

In Baptism the Holy Spirit was poured out on you, so that you were reborn as an heir of eternal life.

Gospel: Luke 3:15-17, 21, 22

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. He was just the forerunner; Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, our Savior. At Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit and the Father testify to this truth. At you baptism, as the Pastor poured water on you in the name of the Triune God, Jesus baptized you with the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 2:1-12

The Lord's Anointed Reigns

  1. He shatters all opposition
  2. He offers you refuge
