The Third Sunday after Epiphany
January 27, 2013
Prayer:
O God from God, O Light from Light, O Prince of Peace and King of kings, To you in heaven's glory bright The song of praise forever rings. To him who sits upon the throne, The Lamb once slain but raised again. Be all the glory he has won, All thanks and praise! Amen, Amen. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 85:1)
Worship Focus: The Messiah is revealed as foretold
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 94, 85, 566, 343
First Lesson: Isaiah 61:1-6
The Messiah, Jesus Christ, speaks through the prophet Isaiah and uses earthly pictures to describe his spiritual work. The Messiah would come to free us from Satan's captivity and release us from death's darkness. In him we have true riches, for he takes away our sin.
Psalm 19, p. 70
God's word brings us joy, for it shows us Jesus, our Light and Salvation. How valuable his word is. It's sweet food for our souls.
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:12-21, 26, 27
We are members of Christ's body.
Gospel: Luke 4:14-21
Jesus fulfills the the Old Testament prophecies. He is the Messiah binding up our broken-hearts with the Good News of forgiveness. He has paid our spiritual debt.
