The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

February 3, 2013

Prayer:

Love divine, all love excelling, Joy of heav'n, to earth come down, Fix in us you humble dwelling, All your faithful mercies crown. Jesus, you are all compassion, Boundless mercy from above. Visit us with benediction; Comfort us with heav'nly love. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 365:1)

The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

February 3, 2013

Worship Focus: Real love

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 498, 395, 365, 490

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Jeremiah 1:4-10

The Lord called Jeremiah to speak his word. God's word accomplishes his purpose whether that is to tear down or build up.

Psalm 78, p. 95

Hear the word of the Lord and pass it on to the next generation

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:27 -- 13:13

Paul speaks to us about spiritual gifts and love.

Gospel: Luke 4:20-32

In love, Jesus spoke God's word to the people in Nazareth. But they rejected it. In love we continue to speak God's word whether others believe or do not.

1 Corinthians 12:27 -- 13:13

Love Makes the Difference

  1. Without love gifts are nothing
  2. Real love imitates God's love

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. What are some truth these words teach us about spiritual gifts?
  2. What are the greater gifts?
  3. Describe the love that is essential.
  4. Describe how this love imitates God's love.
  5. Why is love greater than spiritual gifts?

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
