The Third Sunday in Lent

March 3, 2013

Your cords of love, my Savior, Bind me to you forever; I am no longer mine. To you I gladly tender All that my life can render And all I have to you resign. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 113:5)

The Third Sunday in Lent

March 3, 2013

Worship Focus: God’s faithful patience

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 337, 302, 385, 469

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 3:1-8, 10-15

Centuries earlier the Lord had made his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Now he would keep his promises and through Moses deliver their descendants out of Egypt. For he is the Lord, the unchanging I am, who freely makes his promises and faithfully keeps them.

Psalm 38, p. 81

We are guilty, but the Lord is merciful. He is faithful to his promise of forgiveness. So we come before him with repentant hearts.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Israel thought they stood firm so they took the Lord’s blessings for granted. Learn from their example. Rather than hardening our hearts thinking we can stand on our own, fully lean on the Lord no matter how severe the temptation. He is faithful.

Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

With divine patience Jesus calls us to repentance before it’s too late.

Luke 13:1-9

Hear Christ's Patience Calling You to Repentance

  1. How terrifying my own sin is!
  2. How fruitful Jesus wants your faith to be!

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. What should the wickedness and tragedies in this world lead us to think and do?
  2. Why is our sin so terrifying?
  3. What message takes away the terror and brings joy to our repentant hearts?
  4. How does Jesus work to make us fruitful?
  5. What are some fruits of repentance that faith produces?

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
