The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 10, 2013

Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill the laws demands. Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save and thou alone. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 389:2)

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 10, 2013

Worship Focus: Only Christ’s righteousness delivers us

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 389, 125, 376, 355

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 43:16-21

As the Lord had parted the Red Sea, drowned Pharaoh’s chariots, and provided water in the desert, so also he would bring Judah back from exile in Babylon and so prepare for an even greater deliverance, sending the Savior to deliver sinners. How that new thing would so outshine the former deliverances!

Psalm 73, p. 94

We need and desire nothing else in heaven or on earth except God, our Savior.

Second Lesson: Philippians 3:8-14

What great gain to know Christ and his righteousness! We strain forward toward what Christ has won for us.

Gospel: Luke 20:9-19

Jesus confronts the Jewish leadership with their wicked plans, longing for their repentance. But just as the tenants killed the vineyard owner’s son, soon the Jews would kill the Son. But the stone they rejected would become the capstone. Jesus would rise from the dead.

Philippians 3:8-11

What Gain to Know Christ!

  1. In him we have the righteousness from God
  2. In him we endure all because of his resurrection

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. What are some things people list as gains and accomplishments in life?
  2. Why do all these things count as a loss when it comes to having a right standing before God?
  3. Since everything from ourselves is a loss before God, where does the righteousness come from that receives the verdict of not-guilty in God’s courtroom?
  4. As we suffer and experience losses in life for following Jesus, what makes us rich?
  5. Why can we risk all as we follow Jesus?
