The Second Sunday of Easter

April 7, 2013

Prayer:

Thanks to you, O Christ victorious! Thanks to you, O Lord of life! Death has now no power o’er us, You have conquered in the strife. Thanks because you did arise And have opened paradise! None can fully sing the glory Of the resurrection story. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 147:2)

The Second Sunday of Easter

April 7, 2013

Worship Focus: Boldly share the Easter message

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 149, 145, 165

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Acts 5:12, 17-32

Jesus has sent his followers to share the Easter message. No law or government can stop the Good News. Like the disciples in Jerusalem, so we today continue to share the Good News of Easter.

Psalm 16, p. 68

Jesus has risen! His body did not decay, just as he promised in this Psalm.

Second Lesson: Revelation 1:4-18

The risen and ascended Lord Jesus appeared to the Apostle John during his exile on the island of Patmos about seventy years after the first Easter. We can boldly share the Easter Good News as we remember that our risen Savior reigns over all.

Gospel: John 20:19-31

The Good News of Easter overcomes doubt and unbelief.

Revelation 1:5, 6

Easter Makes Us a Kingdom of Priests

  1. Freed by Christ’s blood
  2. Convinced by Christ’s testimony

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. Why did Jesus die?
  2. What does it mean that we are freed by Christ’s blood?
  3. How do we serve the holy God as his priests?
  4. What does Easter convince us of?
  5. Since Easter has made us into a kingdom, how does that change our outlook on life and the way we live?

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
