The Ascension of our Lord

Lord, enthroned in heav’nly splendor, Mighty Firstborn from the dead, You alone, our strong Defender, You lift up your people’s head. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus, true and living Bread! Jesus, true and living Bread! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 352:1)

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 14:21-31

The Lord rescued his people from their enemies. The Egyptian army drowned as the waters of the Red Sea came crashing in on them. Our ascended Lord rules over all to protect us, his people.

Psalm 47, p. 85

Rejoice! Our God, Jesus Christ, has ascended in glory.

Second Lesson: Revelation 19:11-16

Just as Jesus ascended after he defeated our enemies, so also he will return for the final victory.

Gospel: Luke 24:44-53

Jesus fulfilled the Scriptures. He sends us out as witnesses to proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins. His ascension marks the end of his earthly mission, but as Lord of all he continues to be with us always.

Revelation 19:11-16

Persevere! Your Ascended Lord Reigns!

  1. He has defeated our enemies, just as he said
  2. He will trample them in final victory

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
