The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 2, 2013

Prayer:

O Christ our King, Salvation for all you came to bring. O Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, Our Mediator at the heav’nly throne, Hear our cry and grant our supplication. Lord, have mercy on us. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 266, altered)

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 2, 2013

Worship Focus: Only one gospel saves

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 184, 190, 419, 409

God's Word

First Lesson: 1 Kings 8:22, 23, 41-43

King Solomon prays at the dedication of the temple. He wants all to know that only the Lord, the God of Israel, who is worshiped at this temple, can truly answer prayer.

Psalm 100, p. 104

Give thanks to the Lord, for he alone saves.

Second Lesson: Galatians 1:1-10

The Christians in Galatia had been listening to teachers who had changed the gospel. But a changed gospel is no longer good news, for only the true, genuine gospel of Jesus Christ saves.

Gospel: Luke 7:1-10

Even though the centurion did not come from the people of Israel, he knew and believed that only Jesus had the power and authority to save.

1 Kings 8:22, 23

“Lord, Hear Your Servant’s Prayer”

  1. “For you are faithful”
  2. “For you are merciful”

The Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
