The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 9, 2013

O Holy Spirit grant us grace That we our Lord and Savior In faith and fervent love embrace And truly serve him ever, So that when death is near at hand We at his cross may firmly stand And there find our salvation. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 185)

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 9, 2013

Worship Focus: Only the Lord brings life

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 420, 413, 185, 429

God's Word

First Lesson: 1 Kings 17:17-24

Through the prophet Elijah the Lord displays his power over death to strengthen the widows faith.

Psalm 30, p. 104

The Lord will turn our weeping into rejoicing

Second Lesson: Galatians 1:11-24

Paul had been headed on the path of death. Although he was filled with religious zeal and enthusiasm for God, he was misusing it. Only the Gospel of Jesus could change him from this path of death to life in Christ. Convinced by the Gospel, he could not help sharing this good news of eternal life.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17

Jesus’ care and compassion provides for this widow by returning her son to her.

1 Kings 17:17-24

The Lord Works Strength through Tragedy

  1. A widow's faith grows stronger
  2. A prophet's example emboldens us
