The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 25, 2013

Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty; Hold me with thy pow’rful hand. Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 331:1)

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 25, 2013

Worship Focus:
By the light of the word enter the narrow door

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 280, 431, 214, 331

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 66:18-24

The Lord will send his word to all nations as a glorious light. He will gather his people safely into the heavenly Jerusalem. But the fire of hell awaits all who rebel against his word.

Psalm 27, p. 75

The Lord is our light and our salvation.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 12:18-24

Do we dare to imagine that we can enter heaven by trying to obey God’s commandments? Consider the terror that filled those who heard the Lord speak them from Mt. Sinai. Only through the blood of Jesus do we enter the narrow door into the heavenly Jerusalem.

Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

Many who know of Jesus imagine they can enter heaven as long as they try hard. But they will not enter. Jesus, not our effort, is the only door to heaven. All who trust in him as their only hope will enter no matter from what corner of the earth they have come.

Psalm 43:1-5

Hope Praises Our God Now and Forever

  1. Because his truth reveals his justice
  2. Because his light leads us to his dwelling place

Sermon series: Today we finish the three part sermon series on Psalm 42 & 43. The theme of the series is based on the refrain that occurs three times in these two Psalms:

Why Are You Downcast, O My Soul? Hope in God

  • Aug. 11 - Hope Thirsts for God (Psalm 42:1-5)
  • Aug. 18 - Hope Calls out to God (Psalm 42:6-11)
  • Aug. 25 - Hope Praises God Forever (Psalm 43:1-5)
