The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 1, 2013

O Master of the loving heart, The friend of all in need, We pray that we may be like you In thought and word and deed. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 491:1)

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 1, 2013

Worship Focus: Serve your unchanging Savior

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 224, 524, 385, 491

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Proverbs 25:6, 7

Knowing Jesus empowers us to serve others rather than exalt ourselves.

Psalm 119a, p. 109

God’s Word guides us in true service.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 13:1-8

Since Jesus never changes, we can serve others trusting our God to take care of us, just as he promised

Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14

With a parable Jesus teaches us about Christian humility and service.

Luke 14: 1, 7-14

The Lord Lifts Up the Lowly

  1. Humbly trust him to do so
  2. Selflessly serve others.

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

Mission Festival: Mission Festival is Sept. 15. Service is at 10:30, presentation at 11:15, and potluck at 12:00.

Council Notes: The council met after service on August 18. We opened with prayer. Alvin and Dorothy Nissen were granted the release they had requested so that they could join St. Mark’s (LCMS) in Benson. Pastor reported that he’d be gone Sept 16-21 or 22. The trustees reported that the organist light was finished and that sewer repairs would need to be done in the future.

Pastor reported that the copier needed some maintenance/repair work that could run several hundreds of dollars. The council said to go forward with it. The council authorized giving away the remaining anniversary plates and key chains. In order to allow more time for the speaker on Mission festival on September 15, the council postponed communion to the following week (September 22). The 50th anniversary of the organist was discussed. It was mentioned that it was time to find Sunday school teachers.

The meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. The next meeting is September 8 after the service.
