The Third Sunday of End Times: Saints Triumphant

November 17, 2013

Prayer:

Lord, when your glory I shall see And taste your kingdom’s pleasure, Your blood my royal robe shall be, My joy beyond all measure! When I appear before your throne, Your righteousness shall be my crown; With these I need not hide me. And there, in garments richly wrought, As your own bride I shall be brought To stand in joy beside you. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 219)

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 65:17-25

Using earthly pictures the prophet points us to the new Jerusalem, our heavenly home, filled with peace and joy.

Psalm 150, p. 122

Praise the Lord for his salvation

Second Lesson 2 Thessalonians 2:13-3:5

The Apostle encourages the Christians in Thessalonica as they awaited our Lord’s return on the Last Day.

Gospel: Luke 20:27-38

Jesus clearly shows that the entire Bible teaches the resurrection of the dead.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-3:5

Pray, Holding On to God's Truth Till the End

  1. Give thanks for God's love
    1. The Apostle’s words remind us of some of the great things God’s love has done for us. List some of them.
  2. Seek the courage to do what's right
    1. How does God answer our pray and give us the courage and strength to do right?
  3. Plead for our Lord's word to spread
    1. Why is the spread of God’s word so important?

For All the Saints

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

Youth Group: The youth group is meeting tonight for games and pizza. St. Paul of Morris, Trinity of Johnson, and Mt. Olive of Graceville have been invited. The youth are asked to come at 4:30pm to set up.

Thanksgiving Eve: On Wednesday, November 27, the youth group will serve a lasagna supper starting at 6:00pm. The Thanksgiving Service begins at 7:00pm.

Memorial Books: The memorials are arranged in alphabetical order by last name. Only one side of each sheet is used. Please check out your loved ones to make sure the information is correct. If there are corrections or additions, please use one of the sticky notes to mark it.

Church Cleaning: The list of assignments for the annual church cleaning is on the back of the November calendar.

Council Meeting: The council met after service on November 10. After opening with prayer, reports were given.

The treasurer’s report showed a small deficit in the General Fund.

The trustees reported that they will look into snow removal this winter. It was also mentioned that the north-side basement windows may need some caulking or other work.

The council took the following actions: 1) Renewed the OneLicense for $145 to allow us to legally reprint some of the music we are using. 2) Renewed the annual subscription to the WELS Connection video for $105. 3) Decided to continue with the current health insurance for 2014. Annual premium will be $21,108.

The following positions will be up for election in January. The men listed are currently serving that position: Elder (Dick Lubenow), Secretary (Doug Nelson), Trustee (Duane Hausmann).

The next council meeting is scheduled for December 8, 2013 after service. The meeting adjourned with the Lord’s prayer.
