Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

February 16, 2014

Speak, O Savior; I am listening, As a servant to his lord. Let me show respect and honor To Your holy, precious Word, That each day, my whole life through, I may serve and follow you. Let your Word e’er be my pleasure And my heart’s most precious treasure (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 283:1)

Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

February 16, 2014

Worship Focus: Jesus’ words fill our hearts

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 277, 283, 358, 186

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: 2 Samuel 11:1-17, 26, 27

When David followed his heart rather than the Lord, it led to sin and death. If even believers like David can fall, how much we all need to fill our hearts with Jesus’ words!

Psalm 119a, p. 109

How blessed we are when Jesus’ words fill our hearts.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 2:6-13

Only the Holy Spirit’s words fill our hearts with God’s saving wisdom.

Gospel: Matthew 5:21-37

As the words of God’s saving plan fill our hearts, we want to live for Jesus, our Savior, by saying “No!” to sin, whether that sin is in our actions, words, or thoughts.

1 Corinthians 2:6-13

God’s Wisdom Has Planned Glory for You Who Love Him

  1. Human thought cannot begin to understand
  2. Only the Spirit’s words reveal it

Catechism Student Questions:

  1. Why might we ask “What’s God’s plan for me?”
  2. Do we ever know God’s saving plan well enough to set it aside and move on to other things?
  3. What is God’s secret wisdom that no human investigation could ever figure out?
  4. How does the Holy Spirit make God’s saving wisdom known to us?
  5. Why do we need God’s saving wisdom?
  6. How does he draw us sinners to love him?

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
