The Seventh Sunday of Easter

June 1, 2014

Oh, grant, dear Lord, this grace to me, Recalling your ascension, That I may serve you faithfully, Adorning your redemption; And then, when all my days will cease, Let me depart in joy and peace In answer to my pleading. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 173:3)

The Seventh Sunday of Easter

June 1, 2014

Worship Focus: Our ascended Lord intercedes for us

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 175, 359, 171, 169

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Acts 1:1-14

Luke begins Acts from where he left off in the Gospel with Jesus’ ascension. Jesus does not abandon his disciples. He will send them the Holy Spirit to strengthen them to be his witnesses in all the world. And he will return from heaven visibly just as he had gone into heaven. This reading teaches us as well of our earthly mission and our heavenly hope.

Psalm 8, p. 90

Jesus, the Son of Man, humbled himself and now reigns over all. How majestic is his name in all the earth!

Second Lesson: 1 Peter 4:12-17; 5:6-11

Even though we suffer in the name of Christ, he indeed reigns over all as our ascended King, and he will one day deliver us.

Gospel: John 17:1-11

Jesus prayed for his disciples on the night he was betrayed, and as our ascended King he still intercedes for us.

1 Peter 5:6-11

Your Mighty King Strengthens You

  1. To cast all your cares on him
  2. To resist the lion
  3. To anticipate the glory

Lord’s Supper: The Bible tells us that those who take Communion together are to:

1. Recognize that Christ’s true body and blood are
present in the Sacrament (1 Cor. 11:29),

2. Examine themselves (1 Cor. 11:28), and

3. Be united in faith with the congregation with
which they commune (1 Cor. 10:17).

For these reasons, it is our practice that only those who are members of our congregation or a congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) join us for Holy Communion. If you are interested in learning more about becoming part of our fellowship, please speak to the pastor after the service.
