The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

July 27, 2014

Worship Focus: Be with us, Lord

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: Hymn Sing, 419; 737:1-4; 737:5

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 33:12-23

Israel had sinned. The Lord had rescued them from slavery in Egypt. He had brought them to Mt. Sinai. He had spoken his commandments to them. But after Moses was gone for forty days, they built the golden calf.

Moses has pleaded not only for the Lord to forgive Israel but also for the Lord to continue to go with them. The Lord answers in today’s reading. How much we too need the Lord to be present among us in his mercy and compassion.

Psalm 143, p. 118

We call to the Lord in prayer for his mercy.

Second Lesson: Romans 7:15-25

The Apostle Paul describes the internal struggle that goes on inside of us Christians.

Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30

True peace comes only through Jesus, who brings rest for our souls.

Romans 7:15-25

How the Christian Struggles on the Inside!

  1. We fail to do the good we want
  2. Who will rescue us?

Pastor reported that he performed the wedding of Lauren Nelson and Colter Combellick on June 21. He gave brief reports concerning district convention, VBS, and the circuit pastor’s visit encouraging the Congregational Mission Offering. He would also be attending a week of summer school at Martin Luther College, New Ulm.

The Treasurer reported a General Fund balance of $195.95 and a congregational mission offering (CMO) of $3095.82 for the first half of the year. (Our annual commitment is $8,000)

Trustees had two new air conditioners installed. They will install new lights for the youth room and replace the broken door handle in the narthex with a plate. Duane Hausmann would contact the company that sprayed the narthex roof concerning a small leak.

The Voters approved buying 100 Come Follow Me DVD’s for $200 to be given away at the fair. We would ask St. Paul’s whether they wanted to go in with us on the purchase.

Two large print Meditation subscriptions were renewed for a total of $37.

The Fall schedule was set to return to the regular times on September 7 (Sunday school 9:15am; Bible Class & Youth Class 9:30am; Divine Service 10:30am.

Two other items were brought up which the council could investigate further. These were 1) to consider selling the vacant lot next to the parsonage, due to the high cost of maintaining it, 2) to consider how a ramp or some other means of handicapped accessibility might be incorporated in order to allow wheelchair accessibility to the sanctuary.

The next council meeting will be August 17 after service. The next quarterly voters’ meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 12 after service.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
