August 31, 2014

Prayer:

The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

August 31, 2014

Worship Focus: Jesus rescues us from drowning in doubt

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: Hymn sing, 384, 451, 405

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 14:10-31

The people of Israel doubted whether the Lord would save them. Despite their wavering, the Lord stretched out his mighty arm and parted the Red Sea for them. The Lord’s mighty rescue won’t fail you either.

Psalm 73, p. 94

Don’t doubt. For surely it is God who saves us and delivers us safely home to heaven.

Second Lesson: James 1:2-8, 12

Adversity trains our faith to trust God instead of our own sight. Go to him in prayer, trusting that he will give you the wisdom to persevere through trials until you receive the crown of life.

Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus displays his divine might as he walks on the water. But note his mercy as he reaches out his hand to rescue doubting Peter and then calms the storm. Through his word and sacraments, he reaches out for us to keep us from drowning in our doubts.

Exodus 14:10-31

The Lord’s Mighty Mercy
Delivers His People

  1. Fear him as his dear children
  2. Trust him, for he is your heavenly Father

News and Notes

Prayers: We pray for Justin and Amanda Nelson as they depart for England this week, where they will be stationed for four years. We ask the Lord to bless their time together serving in the US Air Force.

We join Justin and Carrie Flaten and their family in a prayer of thanksgiving at the birth of Colin Charles Flaten. We thank our God for watching over Carrie in childbirth and blessing them with a healthy son. We eagerly await Colin’s rebirth in Baptism as a child of God.

Youth Group: A new year kicks off next Sunday, September 7. The monthly youth meeting will be at 9:30am to elect officers and plan some events for the year.

Later that day, we’ll meet at Doug and Leah Nelson’s for a hayride, campfire, hot dogs, and s’mores from 3:00 to 7:00pm. (In case of rain, plan B is to watch God’s Not Dead.) So come rain or shine. Friends are welcomed as well!

Sunday school: Anyone interested in teaching or helping with Sunday school, please talk to Pastor Bitter. Substitutes are needed too!

Come Follow Me: At the county fair St. Paul’s and St. John’s gave away about 80 copies of the Come Follow Me video. On September 21, we will watch the video in place of the sermon in the Sunday morning service. There will be copies of the video for you to take home and share with friends as long as supplies last.
