And so we come, O God, today And all our woes before you lay. Be with us in our anguish still; Free us at last from ev’ry ill. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 413:4)

The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 7, 2014

Worship Focus: Faith relies on God’s mercy for answers to our prayers

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 411, 413, 402, LAPPY 148

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

Faith holds fast to the Lord’s covenant of mercy. He brings even us close to himself so that we can call on him in prayer.

Psalm 133-134, p. 115

The Lord’s mercy has brought us into his sanctuary to praise him.

Second Lesson: Romans 11:13-15, 28-32

God desires to show mercy to all, both Jew and Gentile.

Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28

Marvel at Jesus’ mercy at work! Although his initial responses to the woman’s plea seem harsh, his mercy was at work strengthening her faith. For his mercy reaches out to those in need. Rely on his mercy for answers to your prayers.

Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

The Lord Gathers Outsiders

  1. How welcomed he wants us to feel!
  2. How his acceptance changes us!

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
