The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 14, 2014

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, the Church’s head, You are her one foundation. In you she trusts, before you bows, And waits for your salvation. Built on this rock secure, Your Church shall endure Though all the world decay And all things pass away. Oh, hear, oh, hear us, Jesus! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 536:1)

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 277, 536, 596, 382

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 6:2-8

The Lord was faithful to his promise and did not let his people perish in Egypt. He is faithful today. His Church shall never perish.

Psalm 34 (see insert)

Give thanks, for the Lord’s promises protect his people.

Second Lesson: Romans 11:33-36

Even when we don’t have the slightest idea how God will keep his promise, he will do it. For he is faithful. His ways are far beyond us.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus is the Christ. He is the Anointed One, whom the Father sent on the mission to rescue sinners. In him our sins are loosed in heaven and on earth. Christ and the forgiveness he brings is the rock on which his Church stands forever.

News and Notes

Come Follow Me: At the county fair St. Paul’s and St. John’s gave away about 80 copies of the Come Follow Me video. Next Sunday, September 21, we will watch the video in place of the sermon in the service. There will be copies of the video for you to take home and share with friends as long as supplies last.

Calendar Correction: The original September calendar has Pastor absences marked on the wrong weeks. Pastor will be in Wisconsin Tues. Sept. 23 to Thurs. Sept. 25 (not Sept. 16-18) and he will be at the Crow River Conference Mon. Sept. 29 to Tues. Sept. 30 (not Sept. 22-23). This also means that Catechism Class will be on Sept. 17 at 3:30pm and not on Sept. 24. A corrected calendar is available in the narthex. Sorry for any inconvenience.

LWMS: The Crow River Conference of the Lutheran Women Missionary Society invites all the women of St. John’s to attend the Fall Rally at St. Paul’s, Morris, on Saturday, September 27.

Pastor Nathan Zastrow from Milbank, SD, will be giving a presentation on cross-cultural ministry, entitled “Crossing Cultures on the Plains.”

Registration opens at 10:30 and opening devotion is at 11:00. A light lunch will be served before the presentation. The rally will wrap up around 3:00.

Mission Festival: Mission Festival is scheduled for October 12. Rather than a special speaker, we have a mission video from the WELS and a special order of service to focus our hearts and minds on spreading God’s Word to places we cannot personally go to. After the service, we’ll have the annual mission festival potluck.

September Ushers: Scott Boettcher capt.), Ryan Gray, Duane Hausmann, Tom Mohr, Harvey Flaten

September Cleaners: John & Tawnia Jepma; Jason & Amy Brown
