The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 5, 2014

Lord, I believe your precious blood, Which at the very throne of God Forever will for sinners plead, For me—e’en for my soul—was shed. Lord, I believe were sinners more Than sands upon the ocean shore, You have for all a ransom paid, For all a full atonement made. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 376:3,4)

God’s Word

First Lesson: Genesis 50:15-21

Joseph’s brothers had mistreated him and sold him as a slave. But Joseph trusted in the Lord. He forgave his brothers, confident that the Lord was taking care of him, making even their evil intention work out for God.

Psalm 103, 105

How wonderful the Lord’s forgiveness is! Praise him.

Second Lesson: Romans 14:5-9

Let the Lord’s forgiveness shine out in all that you do. We live to the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 18:21-25

In view of the great forgiveness the Lord has shown to us despite our huge debt of sin, so we forgive one another, even as our heavenly Father has forgiven us.

Psalm 103:1-22

Praise the Lord As His Pictures of Forgiveness Soak In

  1. How great our need to ponder his forgiveness!
  2. How wonderful his pictures are!
  3. Our praise overflows as his forgiveness soaks in.

The Lord’s Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

News and Notes

Invitation: Immanuel Lutheran Church of Willmar, MN, invites us to join them in giving thanks to God as they celebrate 50 years as a congregation. A special anniversary service will be at 4:00pm today, Oct 5, followed by a baked ham dinner at 5:30pm. A suggested donation for the dinner is $10 per person.

Mission Festival: Mission Festival is scheduled for next Sunday, October 12. Rather than a special speaker, we have a mission video from the WELS and a special order of service to focus our hearts and minds on spreading God’s Word to places we cannot personally go. After the service, we’ll have the annual mission festival potluck.

Come Follow Me Bible Class: Would you like an opportunity to think more about the video we saw last week and how it applies to our lives? The Sunday morning Bible class is going through a seven part series based on the video. All our welcome to come.
