The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 19, 2014

Prayer:

Thou, O Christ, art all I want; More than all in thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 357:3)

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 19, 2014

Worship Focus: Daily repentance serves our Lord

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 478, 306, 311, 459

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God’s Word

First Lesson: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32

God holds each of us accountable for our actions. He calls us to turn from our sin and trust in Christ’s righteousness to cover us. Such faith serves the Lord by the way we live.

Psalm 25, p. 74

A repentant heart looks to the Lord for forgiveness.

Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 13:5-10

Christ living in us changes how we live our lives.

Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Faith is more than words claiming to believe. Faith shows itself by what we do in our lives.

2 Corinthians 13:5-10

Test Yourself and See Christ in You

  1. As you do what is good
  2. As you work for the truth
  3. As you build each other up

The Lord’s Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

News and Notes

Mission Invite: Next week, on October 26, the Sunday school children and youth group will prepare cards to share with children in the Russian mission field. The Sunday school invites members of all ages to come and help out. Here is an excellent opportunity for different generations to interact. There will be no adult Bible class that Sunday so that all can work with the Sunday school. Refreshments will be provided. Come help out the Sunday school at 9:30am, October 26. See the bulletin board in the narthex for pictures from the Russian mission.

Voters’ Meeting: The third quarter voters’ meeting is today at 11:30am.

Russian Mission: Two American missionaries now assist and counsel the Russian Lutheran Christians as they proclaim Christ in southwest Siberia. Two new Russian vicars are settling in to their responsibilities. If all goes well, they can move seamlessly into serving the congregations as pastors by next May. Four new Daylight English teachers are being welcomed on the field working to share the gospel with new prospects.

A dedicated and faithful staff of three deaconesses carries out ministry to children, the sick, and the deaf. Pastor Arno Wolfgramm joins Pastor John Vogt as a part-time professor in the Concordia Seminary. English as a Second Language (ESL) outreach continues in Akademgorodok. Approximately 45 people regularly attend conversation club. (From: www.wels.net/missions/russia)
