God’s Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 40:1-11

Repentance prepares our hearts for the comfort that only Jesus can bring.

Psalm 85, p. 97

God’s forgiveness brings peace to our repentant hearts.

Second Lesson: 2 Peter 3:8-14

How patient our God is as he calls us to repentance! Until the end comes, live holy and godly lives that rejoice in our God’s great patience.

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Sermon: Isaiah 40:1-11

Speak Comfort

  1. The Hero has come to end our hard service
  2. He has paid for our sins
  3. He shepherds us into doubly rich pastures

The Lord’s Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. Communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree on all that the Bible teaches. So we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

Christian Aid and Relief: Christian Aid and Relief works with our missionaries and our sister congregations of the CELC around the world in funding humanitarian aid projects in Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, Thailand, Japan, Russia, Haiti, Mexico, Dominican Republic, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Las Vegas, St. Lucia, and the White Mountain Reservation.

Japan: Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011, relief efforts provided opportunities to build relationships with people in Kesummuma. We continue to have ongoing contact with hundreds of people in this northern section of Japan. This grant enables the representatives of our Japanese Lutheran Church and the contacts in the Kesummuma area to gather together for Bible studies, fellowship, prayer, and worship and to be encouraged in their Christian growth.

Advent Candles

Prelude: Gloria

Responsive Litany:

P: Jesus came to Bethlehem in lowliness, born to take away the sins of the world.

C: Prepare our hearts, dear Jesus, to receive you in repentant faith.

P: Jesus comes to our hearts in lowliness through the foolishness of what is preached and the humbleness of the sacraments.

C: Prepare our hearts, dear Jesus, to receive you in repentant faith.

P: Jesus will come again in glory for all to see to bring salvation to those who are ready and waiting for him.

C: Prepare our hearts, dear Jesus, to receive you in repentant faith.

Candle Lighting

We light the Bethlehem Candle today, the candle of faith. Only faith, believing the prophecy of Micah and the announcement of the angel, would look for the Savior in the little town of Bethlehem. Only faith prepares our lowly hearts to welcome our Savior when he returns in glory. So today we hear John the Baptist calling us to repentance for the forgiveness of sins. We hear his message with hearts of faith that seek our Savior in his word and sacraments. For although the world views these as lowlier than Bethlehem's manger, Jesus enters our hearts to us through them.
