The Third Sunday in Lent

March 8, 2015

Prayer:

Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word; Curb those who by deceit or sword Would seek to overthrow your Son And to destroy what he has done. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 203:1)

The Third Sunday in Lent

March 8, 2015

Worship Focus: God is serious about his word

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 287, 456, 454, 462

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 20:1-17

Having rescued his people from slavery in Egypt, the Lord God gives his people the Ten Commandments. He wants them and us to listen carefully.

Psalm 19, p. 70

How precious God’s Word is!

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

God’s Word appears to be foolishness and weakness. But through it, the Lord gives us true wisdom and real strength.

Gospel: John 2:13-22

Jesus is serious about God’s Word. He drove out the moneychangers from the temple because all that buying and selling crowded out God’s message. Jesus points us to his death and resurrection, which is the heart and core of God’s message to us.

Sermon: Exodus 20:1-3

Rejoice in God’s Commandments

  1. A slave no more!
  2. A joy to serve!

News and Notes

Lenten Service: The Lenten theme this year is Jesus’ words, “I Tell You the Truth.” A light supper will be served at 6:00pm and the service is at 7:00pm. The theme this week is I Tell You the Truth … One of You Will Betray Me,” based on Mark 14:12-21. Pastor Andrus from Mt. Olive, Graceville, and Trinity, Johnson, will be preaching.

Recipes Needed: The ladies greatly appreciated the many recipes submitted, but more are still need. They would like at least one recipe from every member, so that all can be represented as part of the cookbook. Do you know former members or relatives of members who have passed away? Let them know we would be happy to include any family recipes from their time as St. John’s. We welcome any favorite recipe, but are especially low on appetizer and salad recipes.

If you have any family history or story to go with your recipes, please share it. Do have any helpful hints or quotes to include? We can use them as well. Any recipe, story, hint, or quote can be submitted to Karen Hoffman or placed in her bulletin box. The next meeting is planned for April 12 after church. All ladies are invited.

Installation: Immanuel of Hutchinson invites us to join them for the installation of their new pastor, Rev. Eugene DeVries, next Sunday, March 15, at 4:00pm.

March Ushers: Scott Boettcher (capt.), Ryan Gray, Duane Hausmann, Tom Mohr, Harvey Flaten
