Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord! May all your graces be out-poured On each believer’s mind and heart; Your fervent love to them impart. Lord, by the brightness of your light In holy faith your church unite. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 176:1)

Worship Focus: The Holy Spirit brings life

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 182, 176, 186, 537

God's Word

First Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14

In a vivid picture the Lord demonstrates the life-giving power the Holy Spirit exercises through the word of the Lord. Hear the word of the Lord. For through his word he puts his Spirit in us and we live.

Psalm 51b, p. 87

The Holy Spirit creates a new heart within us. He renews us with the Good News of forgiveness in Jesus and brings us the joy of salvation.

Second Lesson: Acts 2:1-21

Just as he had promised, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to give the disciples the courage and the wisdom to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness in his name. We see the events of Pentecost unfold and hear the introduction to Peter’s sermon. The theme of the sermon is that Jesus of Nazareth is the crucified and risen Christ, the only name that saves.

Gospel: John 14:25-27

Through God’s Word the Holy Spirit brings us the peace which the world cannot know. He brings us peace with God through the forgiveness of our sins in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sermon:

Ezekiel 37:1-14

The Lord’s Word Raises Dry Bones

  1. His word brings the life-giving Spirit
  2. His word raises a vast army

News and Notes

Cookbook Meeting: The next cook book meeting is Wednesday, June 3, at 10:00am at the church. Everyone is welcome. We will go over the recipes and the format for the cookbook. Our goal is to have the cookbook ready for a first printing in September. We would like to have it for sale no later than November, so that it can be purchased for Christmas presents.

We still need family histories or a brief synopsis of when you joined the church, children that were confirmed or any story that can be told regarding your years as members of St. John’s.

We will continue to accept recipes, but will be setting a deadline very soon.

Hymn Survey: As the WELS works on the next hymnal to publish in the 2020’s, the committee would like to know what your favorite hymns are. You may fill in the survey online at welshymnal.com or fill out a paper survey available in the narthex. Please return the paper survey to Pastor Bitter when you’ve finished. Deadline: May 31.
