The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 7, 2015

Prayer:

Your works, not mine, O Christ, Speak gladness to this heart They tell me all is done; They bid my fear depart. To whom but you, who can alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 401:1)

Worship Focus: Sanctified by the Word

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 223, 190, 741, 401

God's Word

First Lesson: Deuteronomy 5:12-15

God set apart a day for his Old Testament people of Israel to keep holy by focusing on his word and remembering the promise of the Messiah who would bring real rest.

Psalm 122, see handout

How good to hear the Lord’s word in his house of worship!

Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 4:5-12

God’s word brings light into darkness. How feeble we are, like clay jars. But how powerful his word is to strengthen us even on the darkest days.

Gospel: Mark 2:23-28

Jesus shows that the Sabbath is not about outward regulations but about mercy and love. The Sabbath pointed to him and the rest he brings to us through his word.

Deuteronomy 5:12 and Mark 2:28

Rest in Christ

  1. Rest in Christ’s wounds
  2. Rest in Christ’s works
  3. Rest in Christ’s word

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. So we ask that only confirmed members in fellowship with the WELS commune. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.
