The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 2, 2015

Prayer:

Prayer: Lord, your words are waters living Where I quench my thirsty needs. Lord, your words are bread life-giving; On your words my spirit feeds. Lord, your words will be my light Through death’s cold and dreary night; Yes, they are my sword prevailing And my cup of joy unfailing. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 283:3)

The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 2, 2015

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 224, 349, 376, 524

God's Word

Lesson: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16

Our ascended Lord, Jesus Christ, rules over his church providing us with pastors and teachers to feed our souls and prepare us for works of service.

Psalm 84, p. 96

Jesus feeds us in his courts. How we long for the house of the Lord!

Gospel: John 6:1-15

Although Jesus miraculously provides enough for all, yet notice how he uses the generosity of the boy who shared his lunch and the service of the disciples to distribute the food. So also he uses our generosity and service to bring his word to a starving world in need of a Savior.

Sermon: Exodus 24:3-11

The Sacrificial Blood
Brings Us into God’s Presence

The Lord's Supper: At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of close communion. So we ask that only confirmed members in fellowship with the WELS commune. If you have further questions, please talk with the pastor.

News and Notes

Cookbook: A cookbook meeting was held on July 27 to arrange recipes in the correct categories. We are getting close to getting it into printing, but are in need of proof readers to match the original recipes to avoid any mistakes. Some of the sections are on the first table in the basement. We need volunteers to take one section and arrange the recipes in alphabetical order and proof read the recipes in the particular section. Anyone who could proof read a section can take a category either leaving a note that it was completed or contacting Karen Hoffman at 320-965-2780 or Mona Roth at 320-392-5679. After everything is proofread, Karen Lubenow will make any corrections on her computer file. One more meeting will be necessary to make the final arrangement of the cookbook. The next meeting is set for Wed. , August 19 at 10:00am in the church basement.

We are missing a few names on recipes and will designate a place in the church for everyone to look through those recipes. If anyone finds their recipe without a name, please write it on the correct recipe. This will happen, as soon as the proofreading is done.

Finances:

Jul. $337.25 -- YTD $4188.75
Annual Commitment: $8,000; Needed/month $762

News and Notes (cont)

Call: On Thursday evening (July 23) I received a phone call notifying me that the dual parish of St. Paul's of Ridgeland, WI, and St. John's Colfax, WI, has called me to serve as their pastor. Where can I best serve our Lord and be a good steward of the abilities he has given me? Please pray for me that I put our Lord and his kingdom first as I consider whether to continue serving him here among you or to serve him at the congregations that have called me.

We'll have a congregational meeting today to discuss the call. To allow time for this, the service will be shortened. The goal is to start the meeting at about 9:45am. Pastor Bitter will need to leave no later than 10:15am to preach at St. Paul’s, Morris.

Your thoughts and opinions are always welcomed.

Fair Booth: We need your help! Once again we are sharing a fair booth with St. Paul’s at the Stevens County Fair. But we always have more time slots than people to fill them. Please sign up for a segment of time (or two or three segments if you can).

Parsonage Windows: Plans are still in place to update the parsonage windows. To cover the cost we need $3000 to $4000 for the Improvement Fund.

Church Siding: The siding for the north side of the church is here, but it would be so much easier to paint it before it’s installed. If you’re able to help out with some painting, please let trustee Chuck Nelson or Pastor Bitter know.

Pastor Vacation: Pastor Bitter and family will be gone on August 15 and 16. They are planning on attending a Viking’s game on Saturday and spending the night at Mary’s dad’s in Hutchinson. Pastor Main will be preaching. So service time on August 16 is 10:30am.

August Ushers: Barry Nelson (capt.), John Jepma, Evan Nelson, Dennis Schroeder, Cory Schroeder

August Cleaners: John & Tawnia Jepma, Jason & Amy Brown

Today’s Greeter: Kerry & Mona Roth
