The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 23, 2015

Prayer: Jesus, your boundless love to me No thought can reach not tongue declare. Dwell in my heart eternally. And reign without a rival there. To you alone, dear Lord, I live; Myself to you, dear Lord, I give. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 479:1)

The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 23, 2015

Worship Focus: Wisdom trusts only Jesus

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 474, 401, 462, 356

God's Word

First Lesson: Psalm 9:1-6

Wisdom is personified. Christ is that wisdom. Foolish sinners though we are, he invites us to feast on wisdom, believing that he gave his flesh and blood into death to save us.

Psalm 1, p. 64

True blessing comes as we meditate on God’s Word, inwardly digesting it.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20

As God’s wisdom fills our hearts through his word, we change the way we live.

Gospel: John 6:51-58

Jesus came from heaven to give his flesh and blood into death for the life of the world. Human wisdom rejects such thoughts. Only the wisdom that comes from God can open our hearts to believe.

Sermon: 1 John 2:1-5

News and Notes

College Students: If you have a child attending college or tech school this fall, WELS Campus Ministry would like to stay in touch with them, even if they are living at home. So please get the following contact information to Pastor Bitter as soon as possible: Student’s name, cell phone, email address, college name, student’s school address (including room #), student’s major or program of study, tentative college graduation date, and whether they would like to receive free copies of Meditations and/or Forward in Christ. Thank you!

Parsonage Windows: Plans are still in place to update the parsonage windows. To cover the cost we need $3000 to $4000 for the Improvement Fund.

Church Siding: The siding for the north side of the church is here, but it would be so much easier to paint it before it’s installed. If you’re able to help out with some painting, please let trustee Chuck Nelson or Pastor Bitter know.
