The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 30, 2015

Prayer: I trust, O Christ, in you alone; No earthly hope avails me. You will not see me overthrown When Satan’s host assails me. No human strength, no earthly pow’r Can see me through the evil hour, For you alone my strength renew. I cry to you! I trust, O Lord, your promise true. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 437:1)

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 30, 2015

Worship Focus: Follow only Jesus

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 387, 465, 454, 345

God's Word

First Lesson: Joshua 24:1, 2, 14-18

Joshua had led the Israelites into the promised land. Would the people continue to follow the Lord or would they choose to turn away from him? They promised to be faithful, just as we did on our confirmation. But history shows that many did not keep that promise. May each of us continually choose to keep on following only Jesus.

Psalm 71, p. 92

Follow Jesus by leading the next generation to follow him.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:21-31

As husbands and wives follow God’s design for marriage, they illustrate Christ’s love for us. Such love is a beacon attracting others to hear the call to follow Jesus.

Gospel: John 6:60-69

Only Jesus has the words of eternal life. Follow him alone.

Mark 8:27-35

Who is Jesus Christ?

  1. The Cross-Bearer
  2. The Cross-Sender

News and Notes

Special Voters’ Meeting: On September 10 at 7:00pm there will be a special voters meeting with the circuit pastor (Rev. Michael Neumann) and/or the Minnesota district president (Rev. Charles Degner). The purpose of the meeting is to grant Pastor Bitter a peaceful release from his call to St. John’s and to discuss all issues pertaining to the vacancy and the calling of another pastor. This could include: calling a vacancy pastor, discussion on whether to explore forming a dual parish or not, characteristics and qualifications St. John’s is looking for in their next pastor, and so on.

This meeting begins laying the ground work for the next several years. Please make every effort to attend. As the chairman of the congregation, Justin Flaten invites anyone who would like to share their thoughts, ideas, or concerns with him to contact him before the meeting: phone 320-392-0070, email:

Farewell: Pastor Bitter’s last service here will be September 13 at 10:30am followed by a farewell potluck.

College Students: If you have a child attending college or tech school this fall, WELS Campus Ministry would like to stay in touch with them, even if they are living at home. So please get the following contact information to Pastor Bitter as soon as possible: Student’s name, cell phone, email address, college name, student’s school address (including room #), student’s major or program of study, tentative college graduation date, and whether they would like to receive free copies of Meditations and/or Forward in Christ. Thank you!

Cookbook Update: We are getting close to a printing date for the church cook book. Karen Hoffman is finishing up the final changes. There is still a little bit of time to get your family histories or stories into the cookbook. They can be accepted through September 13. Everyone is encouraged to get their write-ups into the book because it has made the cook book very interesting. We do not want any family to feel left out once it is in print. Please put this information in Karen Hoffman's box or call her if you want to email it.

We are missing names on 2 recipes. The recipes are Corned Beef Casserole and Easy Cherry Dessert. Both recipes are located on the sign-up communion stand in the narthex. Please identify those recipes so that they do not have to go into the cookbook with no names. Either write your name on the recipes or call Karen Hoffman at 320-965- 2780.
