The Lord's Prayer

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us

The Lord's Prayer:

“Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us”

Hymn 388 “Redeemed, Restored, Forgiven”

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession of Sins

P: Beloved in the Lord! God invites us into his presence to worship him as his children in peace and holiness. But we have rebelled against him. Only through God the Son, Jesus Christ, are we reconciled. Let us, therefore, draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, humbly asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, wretched sinner, confess to you my inborn guilt and my daily sins. I began life without any good in me. Rather, evil desires filled my infant heart. I have offended you by my thoughts and attitudes, by my words and actions, failing to do the good you command and instead doing the evil you forbid.

I confess that I have taken your forgiveness for granted and downplayed the seriousness of my sin. I have been slow to believe your promise of full, free, and unconditional forgiveness in Jesus. I have failed to show the same love and forgiveness to others that you have shown to me. Have mercy on me, O Father, for Jesus' sake.

P: Lord, have mercy on us.

C: Christ, have mercy on us.

P & C: Lord, have mercy on us.

P: Upon this your confession, I by virtue of my office as a called servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to you. The Father has sacrificed his Son to pay for every sin, including all of yours. So by the command of our risen Lord Jesus, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Let us rejoice in the peace of forgiveness, as we sing the song of praise.

Song of Praise: (To the tune “Walther” CW 143)

C: We praise you, O God. We acclaim you as Lord.

Your Church universal now shouts in accord:

“O Father, eternal; your true, only Son;

And Spirit, our advocate -- God, three in one!”

v.2 O Christ, King of glory, true God before all,

True man, virgin-born, you destroyed death's dark pall.

Your blood sets us free and you've opened God's door.

In glory you reign at his hand evermore.

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

Hymn 493 “Forgive Our Sin as We Forgive”

Colossians 3:13

. . . bearing with one another and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against anyone -- just as even the Lord has forgiven you, so also you do.

Dear Father, Your Forgiveness Cancels My Debt

  1. My debt is so great,
    but your forgiveness is greater
  2. Help me forgive others

The Catechism: Luther's Explanation to the 5th Petition of the Lord's Prayer from the Small Catechism

C: Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look on our sins and deny our prayer because of them. For we are not worthy of what we ask and do not deserve it. But we pray that he would give all this to us out of grace. For we daily sin much and deserve nothing but punishment. So we will certainly in turn also forgive from the heart and gladly do good to those who sin against us.

Prayer & Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
