The Lord's Prayer

Hallowed Be Your Name

The Lord's Prayer:

“Hallowed Be Your Name”

Hymn 282 - “Lord, Open Now My Heart to Hear”

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession of Sins

P: Beloved in the Lord! God invites us into his presence to worship him in peace and holiness. But we have rebelled against him. Only through God the Son, Jesus Christ, are we reconciled. Let us, therefore, draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, humbly asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, wretched sinner, confess to you all my sins. I began life without any good in me. Rather, evil desires filled my infant heart. I have offended you by my thoughts and attitudes, by my words and actions, failing to do the good you command and instead doing the evil you forbid.

Today I especially confess my sins of dishonoring your name: I have taken your Word for granted. I have failed to stand up for your truth. I have lived in ways contrary to your commands, which brings shame to your name. I justly deserve your punishment now and forever. Have mercy on me, O Father, for Jesus' sake.

P: Lord, have mercy on us.

C: Christ, have mercy on us.

P & C: Lord, have mercy on us.

P: Upon this your confession, I by virtue of my office as a called servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to you. The Father has sacrificed his Son to pay for all sins. So by the command of our risen Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Let us rejoice in the peace of forgiveness, as we sing the song of praise.

Song of Praise: (To the tune “Walther” CW 143)

C: We praise you, O God. We acclaim you as Lord.

With angels and seraphs we shout in accord:

“Most holy, most holy, most holy, high Lord,

You rule all creation in glory out-poured!”

With prophets, apostles, and martyrs in white,

Your Church universal acclaims you aright:

The Father, eternal; your true, only Son;

And Spirit, our advocate -- God, three in one!

O Christ, King of glory, true God before all,

True man, virgin-born, you destroyed death's dark pall.

Your blood sets us free and you've opened God's door.

In glory you reign at his hand evermore.

O come, then, Lord Jesus, to bring us your aid,

For we are your people, for whom you have paid.

We know that you're coming as Judge over all

To bring us, believers, to heaven's bright hall.

Hymn 204 “O God, Our Lord, Your Holy Word”

John 17:1-6

The Catechism: Luther's Explanation to the 1st Petition of the Lord's Prayer from the Small Catechism

C: Hallowed be your name. What does this mean? God's name is certainly holy on its own, but we ask in this petition that it be holy among us also.

How is this done? When God's Word is taught clearly and purely and we also as God's children live holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But whoever teaches or lives otherwise than God's Word teaches, profanes God's name among us. Guard us from this, heavenly Father!

Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
