The Lord's Prayer

Your Will Be Done

The Lord's Prayer:

“Your Will Be Done”

Hymn Sing

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession of Sins

P: Beloved in the Lord! God invites us into his presence to worship him as his children in peace and holiness. But we have rebelled against him. Only through God the Son, Jesus Christ, are we reconciled. Let us, therefore, draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, humbly asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, wretched sinner, confess to you my inborn guilt and my daily sins. I began life without any good in me. Rather, evil desires filled my infant heart. I have offended you by my thoughts and attitudes, by my words and actions, failing to do the good you command and instead doing the evil you forbid.

I confess that I have listened to the will of your enemies. I have doubted your word because of Satan's lies. I have longed for the pleasures and riches of this world. I have given in to the laziness and desires of my sinful flesh. Have mercy on me, O Father, for Jesus' sake.

P: Lord, have mercy on us.

C: Christ, have mercy on us.

P & C: Lord, have mercy on us.

P: Upon this your confession, I by virtue of my office as a called servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to you. The Father has sacrificed his Son to pay for every sin, including all of yours. So by the command of our risen Lord Jesus, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Live as forgiven children of God.

C: Amen.

P: Let us rejoice in the peace of forgiveness, as we sing the song of praise.

Song of Praise: (To the tune “Walther” CW 143)

C: We praise you, O God. We acclaim you as Lord.

Your Church universal now shouts in accord:

“O Father, eternal; your true, only Son;

And Spirit, our advocate -- God, three in one!”

O Christ, King of glory, true God before all,

True man, virgin-born, you destroyed death's dark pall.

Your blood sets us free and you've opened God's door.

In glory you reign at his hand evermore.

O come, then, Lord Jesus, to bring us your aid,

For we are your people, for whom you have paid.

We know that you're coming as Judge over all

To bring us, believers, to heaven's bright hall.

The Word

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

Hymn 414 “I Leave All things to God's Direction ”

Matthew 26:39,42

And when he [Jesus] had gone on a little farther, he fell on his face praying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup go away from me. But not as I will, rather as you will.” . . . When he had gone away again for the second time, he prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this to go away unless I drink it, let your will be done.” (Matthew 26:39,42)

Dear Father, Carry Out Your
Good And Gracious Will Among Us

  1. Your will wants to save us from our enemies
  2. Your will wants us to live holy lives

The Catechism: Luther's Explanation to the 3rd Petition of the Lord's Prayer from the Small Catechism

C: Your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

What does this mean? God's good and gracious will is certainly done without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it be done among us also.

How is this done? When God breaks and hinders every evil plan and will that won't let us keep God's name holy or let his kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; rather, he strengthens and keeps us firm in his Word and in faith until our end. This is his gracious and good will.

Prayer & Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
