Confession of Sins

P: Dearly Beloved: Unworthy sinners though we are, our gracious Father invites us to confess our sins. For he has given his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Redeemer.

C: O holy, most merciful God, I confess to you my inborn guilt and my daily sins. I began life dead in sin. I served sin as my master. And even though you have set me free, I so often fall again into sin's traps. I have taken for granted your blessings of peace and prosperity. I have been slow to pray for my country and to shine out as a light by which others may glorify you. I have used the blessings of our country for selfish gain, unmindful of the needs of others. Have mercy on me and forgive me for Jesus' sake.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us. He has given you his Son, Jesus Christ. All your sins were laid on Jesus, the Lamb of God. He is your ransom, whose blood sets you free. You are fully forgiven. You are his precious, blood-bought child. Live as children of God.

C: Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, stand and praise the Lord.

Song of Praise (tune: "Battle Hymn of the Republic")

1. Sin enslaved me from my birth, I fought and warred against my God.

Rebel nature lives in me and fights against his holy rod.

But the Hero born of Mary changed the path on which I trod.

God's grace is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

2. In a hay-filled, humble manger Christ was born across the sea.

God the Son made flesh for us. He hid his heav'nly majesty.

His red blood was shed for me and by his death he set me free.

God's love is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

3. Jesus' holy life of righteousness is now my battle dress.

Clothed with him by Baptism's water faith endures the battle stress.

White, unstained by Satan's arrows, Christ is my true righteousness.

God's light is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

4. Jesus rose in glory crushing Satan's head. He broke death's chains.

Through his Word and Sacrament he guards our faith and o'er us reigns.

I will watch the blue sky for him as against my sin I strain.

God's will is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

(To the tune of “America the Beautiful”)

1. O gracious Lord, we give you thanks

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain.

O Lord, our God and mighty King,

We praise you for your love

That blessed us with this precious land

From sea to shining sea.

2. O gracious Lord, we pray to you

To bless our government.

Keep it from evil ways, dear Lord,
